Voltalinux is a GNU/Linux distro based on Slackware GNU/linux and the pkgsrc package system from NetBSD. The two pieces of software put together give you great power.
Great availability of software for a strong and solid distribution as Linux Slackware. The pkgsrc is already available to the linux user.
Now this project want to offer a prebuilt distribution with those features readily available. Any user can enjoy the clean design of slackware with the availability of over 5500 ports (real ports) ready to be installed (list of ports available )
In minutes you can have running software such as postfix or dovecot, qmail and so on.
The distro is a core based on about 50 packages from Slackware-current (now about slack 11) and the pkgsrc 2006Q1 (packaged for slack) system from NetBSD.
The base system is split into three sets base, devel and net. If you install only the first one, very lightweight, it will allow to run precompiled binary packages only.
If you will install the devel set you will be able to build your own packages with the pkgsrc system;
The advantage is that mantaining only few quantity of pieces it is possible to have a complete operating system (thanks to the existing work of many other, of course !!!)
The distribution is mainly intended for server use but you can do what you want.
Pro and Cons.?
Pro:
- is Slackware 100% compatible, whatever is done for slack work also on Voltalinux !!!
- you don’t have to compile anything to have a working system (in about half an hour you have a base system)
- you have many prebuilt kernels
- more than 5400 ports ready to be used.
Cons:
- you will have two packages system living together one for the base system (slack), the other for the applications (ports)
Hardware requirements.
486 processor or newer, 32 MB of ram, a cdrom, about 200 MB of free disk space (for the base system, more if you will build your packages)
CDRom reader.
Files distributed.
- 1 iso bootable image (to be placed on a cdrom) about 250 Mb
it is a working base operating system with pkgsrc ready to be used, with no graphical front end but only
working with command line (you can compile any window manager using ports !)
You have: inside the ISO there are a bootable system from cd, installation intructions, use intructions, some ready-to-be-used packages.
"After some building and test and debugging, is out.
It should be quite stable, now is your turn to test and say if it is OK.
After the debug is closed the stable release will be issued.
If you find problems during the building of new packages with the pkgsrc system please let us know (we will send-pr to pkgsrc mantainer)
Happy hacking.
