Gentoo is a free operating system based on either Linux or FreeBSD that can be automatically optimized and customized for just about any application or need. Extreme configurability, performance and a top-notch user and developer community are all hallmarks of the Gentoo experience.
Thanks to a technology called Portage, Gentoo can become an ideal secure server, development workstation, professional desktop, gaming system, embedded solution or something else - whatever you need it to be. Because of its near-unlimited adaptability, we call Gentoo a metadistribution.

"The Gentoo Release Engineering project is pleased to announce the much-delayed release of Gentoo Linux 2007.0, code named "Secret Sauce". This release met with several delays due to an abnormally high number of security vulnerabilities in large packages which had to be rebuilt using the newer, secure versions of the packages. There was also a complete resnapshot done about half-way through the release period due to the release taking so long and the packages becoming stale."

Gentoo is a big phat hack and it's maintainers are unable to cope with it's complexity.
QA ist the most ctitical point of their unabilities...

Great distro for those that want to get their hands dirty and really customize their system. Downsides: time taken to add applications using emerge, time consuming to maintain, not very user friendly to configure (documentation is excellent in most cases though).

Not a n00b distro. Hard to get started, hard to keep going.

has been my distro of choice for 3years now.

I have used it for years, It's time consuming to install (a few hours) but I think that it is realy easy to maintain. All you have to do to keep it up to date is emerge --sync and emerge -uvDp world once a week. There are of course failures with specific packages from time to time but this is very rare.

Great distro! I switched from Mandrake/Mandriva ~1 year ago. The most difficult part is setup - I spend almost two weeks installing it and tweaking it on my notebook. Once it was up and running, I had no problems at all. It's fast, reliable and easy to maintain.
Utopia
I've been using Gentoo for about 5 years now... It's amazing how far it's come, and where it could be headed. There's nay-sayers to every distro; but I have concluded no others compete (except maybe debian or debian-based).

Been using Gentoo for 4 years. Great Distro. Not for everybody, but suits me perfectly. Love it. Pros: Great documentation and community, endless customization, package management, most important for me: fun. Cons: First install is long process, but easy with documentation, Sometimes compiling from source is a pain and long, but most of the time it doesn't take to long.

Very good distro ! I use gentoo for 2 years at work.
I have 3 servers : 1 DELL PowerEdge 1850 and 2 HP Proliant DL380 G3.
Those servers runing NAGIOS, VSFTPD and SQUID.
Ok, it's very long to install Gentoo but it's very easy to maintain.
Very good documentation in many languages on the official website and many howtos on the wiki-site.
A great community, as you cant see on the forum.
long-life for the Gentoo Project !!!
A (french) user Happy :)
