Aurox Live Generator is a tool for building your own operating system bootable directly from CD or DVD. This is the first OS in the world, which gives you a possibility of preparing customized iso images from www site. The OS is based on scripts prepared dynammically, which are downloading choosed software from network repositories. First of all usage of generator is very simple. Even people who have never compiled kernel so far can build their own Linux distribution. Using scripts doesn't need to know anything about programming or configuring Linux system. It also doesn't need to know anything about Linux!

The Small version fits on a small 9cm CD and comes with everything necessary for Internet and multimedia usage: browsing, mailing, watching movies, playing MP3s, ... . The Big version also includes more advanced programs for office usage such as OpenOffice.org. But for both the focus is on programs that are useful for the user.

Devil-Linux is a distribution which boots and runs completely from CDROM. The configuration can be saved to a floppy diskette or a USB pen drive. Devil Linux was originally intended to be a dedicated firewall/router but now Devil-Linux can also be used as a server for many applications. Attaching an optional hard drive is easy, and many network services are included in the distribution. The system is designed to install without the use of a hard drive. It requires the use of a CDROM and a write-protected floppy. The CDROM provides the operating system, and the floppy provides the configuration information, via a tarball that is unpacked into the /etc directory. In this way, the system is fully configurable, yet the running system has no writeable device.

SabayonLinux is based on the source-based distro named Gentoo - http://gentoo.org. Gentoo is a highly customizable distro which we have used as our base and using their excellent development techniques, we have created a pre-configured distribution with the tenets of Performance, Versatility, and Stability. If you have any more question about what Gentoo is and its philosophy, please visit their website. * Performance: We have modified make.conf to ensure that our distribution runs at the highest speed possible on newer computer hardware and fast on semi-older hardware. As such, our distrobution is not meant to be run on Pentium Pros, although it is entirely concievable. * Versatility: Again, we have modifed make.conf to give nice wide range of features for all computers. We have also compiled the kernel to run well against most of the architectures out there while still leaving plenty of room for performance and, as always, the ability to change anything at your desire. * Stability: While many would call the distrobution extremely experimental, we give options. You can boot up with xgl to have xgl autoset up and installed, or you can boot with gentoo legacy and have a very conservative system. Also, being built upon the strengths of Gentoo, you know you're getting a rock solid distribution worthy to slam with processor and ram intensive jobs while having the OS run smoothly.

DragonFly BSD

DragonFly is an operating system and environment originally based on FreeBSD. DragonFly branched from FreeBSD in 2003 in order to develop a radically different approach to concurrency, SMP, and most other kernel subsystems. DragonFly belongs to the same class of operating system as BSD and Linux and is based on the same UNIX ideals and APIs. DragonFly gives the BSD base an opportunity to grow in an entirely different direction from the one taken in the FreeBSD-5 series. It is our belief that the correct choice of features and algorithms can yield the potential for excellent scalability, robustness, and debuggability in a number of broad system categories. Not just for SMP or NUMA, but for everything from a single-node UP system to a massively clustered system. We believe that a fairly simple but wide-ranging set of goals will lay the groundwork for future growth. The existing BSD cores, including FreeBSD-5, are still primarily based on models which could at best be called 'strained' as applied to modern systems. True innovation has given way to basically just laying on hacks to add features, such as encrypted disks and security layering that in a better environment could be developed at far less cost and with far greater flexibility. We also believe that it is important to provide API solutions which allow reasonable backwards and forwards version compatibility, at least between userland and the kernel, in a mix-and-match environment. If one considers the situation from the ultimate in clustering... secure anonymous system clustering over the internet, the necessity of having properly specified APIs becomes apparent. Finally, we believe that a fully integrated and feature-full upgrade mechanism should exist to allow end users and system operators of all walks of life to easily maintain their systems. In this regard, DragonFly has chosen to adopt the BSD PkgSrc system. DragonFly's ultimate goal is to provide fully cache coherent and fully transparent single-system-image style clustering. Achieving this goal has required a great deal of groundwork to be laid down, with more on its way, in order to properly support the models and functionality required. As of 2006 we are well past the half way mark to our goal!

Voltalinux is a GNU/Linux distro based on Slackware GNU/linux and the pkgsrc package system from NetBSD. The two pieces of software put together give you great power. Great availability of software for a strong and solid distribution as Linux Slackware. The pkgsrc is already available to the linux user. Now this project want to offer a prebuilt distribution with those features readily available. Any user can enjoy the clean design of slackware with the availability of over 5500 ports (real ports) ready to be installed (list of ports available ) In minutes you can have running software such as postfix or dovecot, qmail and so on. The distro is a core based on about 50 packages from Slackware-current (now about slack 11) and the pkgsrc 2006Q1 (packaged for slack) system from NetBSD. The base system is split into three sets base, devel and net. If you install only the first one, very lightweight, it will allow to run precompiled binary packages only. If you will install the devel set you will be able to build your own packages with the pkgsrc system; The advantage is that mantaining only few quantity of pieces it is possible to have a complete operating system (thanks to the existing work of many other, of course !!!) The distribution is mainly intended for server use but you can do what you want. Pro and Cons.? Pro: - is Slackware 100% compatible, whatever is done for slack work also on Voltalinux !!! - you don’t have to compile anything to have a working system (in about half an hour you have a base system) - you have many prebuilt kernels - more than 5400 ports ready to be used. Cons: - you will have two packages system living together one for the base system (slack), the other for the applications (ports) Hardware requirements. 486 processor or newer, 32 MB of ram, a cdrom, about 200 MB of free disk space (for the base system, more if you will build your packages) CDRom reader. Files distributed. - 1 iso bootable image (to be placed on a cdrom) about 250 Mb it is a working base operating system with pkgsrc ready to be used, with no graphical front end but only working with command line (you can compile any window manager using ports !) You have: inside the ISO there are a bootable system from cd, installation intructions, use intructions, some ready-to-be-used packages.

* What is Arch Linux? -------------------------- Arch Linux is an independent i686-optimised community distribution for intermediate and advanced Linux users. Originally based on ideas from CRUX, a great distribution developed by Per Lidén. * Advantages ----------------- Arch is fast, lightweight, flexible and simple. Those aren't very fancy buzzwords but they're all true. Arch is optimized for the i686 processor, so you get more for your cpu cycle. It's lightweight compared to RedHat et al, and its simple design makes it easy to extend and mold into whatever kind of system you're building.. * Unique Package Management --------------------------------------- This is backed by an easy-to-use binary package system - pacman - that allows you to upgrade your entire system with one command. Arch also uses a ports-like package build system (Arch Build System) to make it easy to build packages, which can also be synchronized with one command. Oh yea, and you can rebuild your entire system with one command, too. Everything is done quite simply and transparently.

Gentoox Linux is an adaptation of the popular source based Linux distribution called Gentoo. It retains all the features of the original (portage, sysvinit etc...) but has a patch system created from the ground up, by myself, which is specifically designed for Gentoox. "Magic" (as I have labelled it) allows users to install new software, upgrade their kernel and fix bugs. To learn more about magic, run "magic usage" once you have installed Gentoox. Gentoox runs along side games - you get 3 choices during installation: E, F and Native. Both E and F create a loopback filesystem meaning that none of your drives are formatted during installation (except for cache partitions). If you choose "Native", then your F: partition is formatted to ReiserFS (making it inaccessible to Xbox applications). Gentoox can be loaded via a .xbe file, or from a Cromwell based BIOS (which can be flashed to your modchip during installation). When using E or F installations, you are totally risk free - if you dont like Gentoox, simply delete all the files it installs (about 7 in total) and its gone. There are three versions of Gentoox: Pro Edition, Home Edition and Media Center Edition. All three are 100% free and opensource, the difference between Home and Pro is that the Home Edition has many software packages preinstalled and preconfigured for instant usablity straight out of the box where as Pro doesn't even have a graphical user interface let alone any "useful" applications. Pro is a bare minimum installation for booting the system, the entire customisation of the OS is left in the user's hands with Pro. Media Center edition is more of a "Plugin" than a separate distribution. It allows you to have a Media Center along with Gentoox Home or Pro.

GoboLinux is a modular Linux distribution: it organizes the programs in your system in a new, logical way. Instead of having parts of a program thrown at /usr/bin, other parts at /etc and yet more parts thrown at /usr/share/something/or/another, each program gets its own directory tree, keeping them all neatly separated and allowing you to see everything that's installed in the system and which files belong to which programs in a simple and obvious way.

Trinity Rescue Kit or TRK is a 100% free CD bootable Linux distribution (live cd) aimed specifically at offline operations for Windows and Linux systems such as rescue, repair, password resets and cloning, with the ability to update itself . It has custom tools to easily recover data such as deleted files, clone Windows installations over the network, perform antivirus sweeps with 2 different antivirus products, reset windows passwords, read AND write on NTFS partitions, edit partition layout and much much more. Trinity Rescue Kit 3.1 is the evolved version of 3.0 and a complete rewrite of version 1.1 and the unfinished 2.0. It ‘s mostly based on Mandrake 10.2 (Mandriva 2005) binaries and heavily adapted startup scripts. Although it requires a bit more startup time than version 1.1, it still is a fast booter(39 seconds compared to 31 in TRK 1.1 on a Compaq Evo D51s, 2.4Ghz) , recognizing even more hardware than ever. It now also has a feature for automatic proxy detection and custom startup environment adaptations. An administrator can configure his LAN (using DHCP and a webserver) so TRK3 can taken advantage of that, making it even more powerful. Apart from that, you can have any computer run a specific script from a local folder (f.i. to run maintenance and backups in batch) Where Trinity Rescue Kit 1.1 is looking at around 120.000 downloads so far (and who knows how many CDRs got burned), TRK 3.1 claims to be the most complete, fast to use toolkit when it comes to performing offline rescueing on both Windows and Linux.

It's been a while since our latest status report, now I have the pleasure to announce the first public preview for sidux 2007-01. Please note this is not the final release. The full featured final release of sidux-2007-01 "Χάος" will be ready in 1-2 weeks (i686 and amd64), intermediate xdeltas will be provided as needed until then.

This release mostly is a proof of concept for the sidux building environment, the co-operation of our teams and to discuss the final packages list with our users - now is the time to discuss and lobby for meta tasks to install additional software for the final release. It's completely based on Debian Sid and enriched & stabilized with sidux own packages and scripts. It comes with kernel 2.6.19.2, which is based on the most recent vanilla kernel together with several patches for improved hardware support. Other special purpose kernels are available from the sidux servers and will be accompanied by experimental 2.6.20-rc variants for testing soon.

Now to the interesting topics, like what's on the menu for now:

  • amd64 (AMD64, Intel Core2, newer 64 bit capable Pentium 4 CPUs (watch for the "lm" flag in /proc/cpuinfo or use infobash -v 3) and i686 (pentium pro/ pentium II or newer).
  • debian sid, up to date as of 2007-01-24 19:00 UTC.
  • kernel 2.6.19.2 (smp, voluntary preemption).
  • minimal, but fully functional KDE 3.5.5 (en + de).
  • completely overhauled live mode.
  • largely adapted installer.
  • new graphical installer frontend.
  • netcardconfig can cope with wpa/ wpa2 again.
  • offline manual for en + de directly on the disc, online manuals for more languages online at http://manual.sidux.com/; a big thank you goes to the documentation and translation teams!
  • a completely new ISO creation process written from scratch in a clean room environment.

What hasn't made it into the preview yet:

  • merging the great artwork from Cathbard and cleary hasn't happened completely yet, it will appear until the final release.
  • we're working with a small package list for now, to ease up testing, further xdelta patches and to leave some headroom for discussions which of your package wishes can become part of the final ISO.
  • we cannot provide an updateinstall due to largely changed technical concepts in favour of providing a clean debian sid based system.
  • the preview contains only DFSG free software, this affects hardware support for devices that need non-free components, such as firmwares (see below).

Hints for hardware with non-free needs:

(after adding contrib/ non-free to /etc/apt/sources.list and ensuring internet access)
  • ATi Radeon graphics: 3d acceleration for older cards up to r35x should work, newer Radeon X1xxx cards need non-free drivers for accelerated performance, please use get-sidux-binary-gfx to fetch install scripts for these cards.
  • Atheros/ "madwifi" wlan: m-a a-i madwifi.
  • Atmel AT76c50x 11 MBit/s wlan: apt-get install atmel-firmware
  • AVM ISDN/ ADSL PCI/ USB Karten: AVM's closed source driver are not compatible with kernel 2.6.19.x yet, please download kernel 2.6.18.x (http://sidux.net/files/kernel/) for now and use m-a a-i avm.
  • Broadcom/ bcm43xx wlan: apt-get install bcm43xx-fwcutter.
  • Eagle USB ADSL modem: fetch the firmware from http://eagle-usb.org/ueagle-atm/non-free/ and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • DVB firmwares for various full featured DVB TV cards (most budget cards won't need this): fetch the needed firmeware (check dmesg) from http://www.linuxtv.org/downloads/firmware/ and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • hostap based 11 MBit/s wlan with loadable firmware (e.g. D-Link DWL-520 rev. E1 and others): http://www.oakcourt.dyndns.org/~andrew/dwl520e1.html
  • Intel ipw2100, 11 MBit/s wlan: fetch the firmware from http://ipw2100.sf.net/ and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • Intel ipw2200, 54 MBit/s wlan: fetch the firmware from http://ipw2200.sf.net/ and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • Intel ipw3945, 54 Mbit/s wlan: apt-get install ipw3945d firmware-ipw3945
  • Intersil prism54, 54 MBit/s wlan: fetch the firmware from http://prism54.org/firmware/ and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • nVidia graphics: 3d acceleration isn't possible with free drivers yet, please use get-sidux-binary-gfx to fetch install scripts for these cards.
  • Texas Instruments ACX100 (22 Mbit/s)/ ACX111 (54 MBit/s) wlan, fetch the firmware from http://acx100.erley.org/acx_fw/acx1xx.htm and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • ZyDAS zd1202 11 MBit/s wlan: apt-get install zd1201-firmware
  • ZyDAS zd1211 54 MBit/s wlan: fetch the firmware from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=129083 and place it under /lib/firmware/.
  • We will check if we can provide packages for at least some of these devices, but the legal status isn't necessarily easy.

This is still a preview, please help us to improve the final release with testing an reporting all issues you encounter, especially:

  • the new graphical installer.
  • boot cheats like fromiso, toram.
  • new installer for nvidia & ati gfx drivers.
  • operations with SCSI or S-ATA optical drives.
  • general operations as a whole.

Roadmap

  • sidux-2007-01 "chaos" - calender week 5-6 2007

Oz Linux is a Linux distribution (Unix-like operating system) of academic and scientific endeavors. It allows the user to choose between a GNOME or KDE desktop environment install (or enable both and switch between the two by restarting the X Window System). Oz Linux is named in honour of two Dutch physicists: Leonard Salomon Ornstein & Frederik Zernike, who developed the statistical mechanics Ornstein-Zernike equation, or OZ-equation. Oz Linux utilizes the Conary software system which combines package management and Software Configuration Management, which replaces the need for programs like apt-get and yum. Conary accomplishes this with such features such as rollbacks, changeset (incremental) updates, and a distributed development model. Oz Linux uses the Anaconda installer which enables a simple installation method, giving the user four different options for an install. * Minimal Install * GNOME Install * KDE Install * Install everything (which installs both GNOME and KDE) Oz Linux latest release downloads: http://www.rpath.org/rbuilder/project/oz/releases

Openwall GNU/*/Linux (or Owl for short) is a security-enhanced server platform. The primary approaches to security are proactive source code review, privilege reduction, privilege separation, careful selection of third-party software, safe defaults, "hardening" to reduce the likelihood of successful exploitation of security flaws, and the uses of "strong" cryptography. Also available are policy enforcement and integrity checking capabilities. Besides the security enhancements, other key properties of Owl include the ability to rebuild the entire system from source with one simple command ("make buildworld"), support for software packages found in or developed for Red Hat Linux (Fedora, RHEL) and compatible distributions, and support for multiple architectures (currently supported are x86, x86-64, SPARC, and Alpha).
